FAQ's - Fibroid Treatment Options

  • By Melbourne Endovascular

In this article by Dr Bevan Brown (Obstetrician & Gynaecologist) and Dr Eisen Liang (Interventional Radiologist) the alternative treatments for uterine fibroids are discussed. These include medical treatment options, myomectomy, Mirena, hysterectomy, endometrial ablation and uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE).

Dr Brown states "When medical treatment and less invasive procedures are ineffective or unsuitable, UFE is a non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy. It is minimally invasive, but highly effective in reducing heavy periods, shrinking fibroids and relieving period pain. All fibroids present are treated at the same time in a single procedure. Six randomised controlled trials have shown that UFE is as effective as hysterectomy."

Dr Eisen Lang discusses the ideal candidate for UFE - "Women significantly troubled by fibroid related symptoms such as menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea and bulk symptoms, desiring to avoid major surgery, preferring a minimally invasive approach and faster recovery."
